NEW! In a series of four field sessions, learn basic concepts of botany from a team of university professors and experienced naturalists. The program will use living plants and is being held in varied habitats across the four seasons.
Participants will discuss reproduction, anatomy and morphology, growth and development, plant diversity, and plant nomenclature through a close-up examination of flowers, shoots, roots, leaves, fruits, bark and winter buds. Whether you’re new to the subject or want a refresher course, this program’s for you.
Your classroom will be the field, actually different fields around the state. The Spring Session will be held at Maxwell Mays Refuge in Coventry and the other locations will be selected closer to the time of the session.
RIWPS will provide you with a hand lens to take into the field and a synopsis of what you learned after each session so you can test your new botanical knowledge on your own after the program.
Each session will be taught by two to three of the instructors on the teaching team, headed by Brian Maynard, Professor of Plant Sciences at URI. The instructors include: Rebecca Brown, Associate Professor, URI; Sarah Ferguson, Graduate Student URI; Dana Filippini, Graduate Student URI & National Park Service; Susan Gordon, Kinney Gardens; Marybeth Hanley, Botanist; Sindy Hempstead, PhD; Garry Plunkett, Conservation activist, Scott Rurhen, PhD; Tim Whitfield, Assistant Professor (Research), Brown University.
