Botanical Illustration Class

March 16 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

Amy Bartlett Wright, Winged bean Psophocarpus tetragonolobus.
Published in The Diversity of Life by E.O. Wilson, Harvard University Press, 1992

Art and botany have been, and continue to be, strongly connected. Working with local artist Amy Bartlett Wright, you will learn techniques for creating scientific illustrations (pen and ink line drawing) from a pressed plant specimen. You can bring your own specimen or use one that we supply.

Plant identification requires careful observation of morphological detail, as does botanical illustration. The two skills are complimentary and this illustration class is designed to help you gain familiarity and confidence observing and understanding important features of plants.

Amy has worked for thirty-five years as a professional artist, muralist and natural science illustrator. Her work has been included in numerous scientific publications and can be seen on buildings around the country including downtown Providence.

This program is free and offered in conjunction with the the exhibit, Entwined: Botany, Art and the Lost Cat Swamp Habitat, January 10 through April 30 at the John Hay Library, Brown University. The exhibit is the collaborative work of the Brown University Herbarium, Rhode Island Historical Society (RIHS), Rhode Island Wild Plant Society (RIWPS), and John Hay Library.

Location of Class: Nature Lab, Rhode Island School of Design, 13 Waterman Street, Providence.

THIS CLASS IS LIMITED TO 12 PARTICIPANTS.  YOU MUST PREREGISTER TO RESERVE YOUR PLACE.
