Botanizing & Sketching: Twigs & Buds

November 13 @ 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm

frances-topping-twigsSketching plants helps one learn a plant’s specific details. This is useful in identification, understanding glossary words and a satisfying act in itself. A close look can bring surprises.

Join Frances Topping for this second session in her series, Botanizing & Sketching, to explore the varied world of tree and shrubs’ twigs and buds. Bring a sketchbook and pen or pencil. We will start outside looking at plants weather permitting and then look more closely indoors. Frances will provide twigs of a number of species for sketching. Sketching techniques will be introduced.

Frances Topping holds a Certificate of Natural Science Illustration for the Rhode Island School of Design and a degree in Geography, Botany and Zoology as well as in Graphic Design with Illustration and Photography.  Among other places, her drawings are featured on RIWPS native plant sale posters.

Note: The Kettle Pond Visitor Center is part of US. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Ningret Wildlife Refuge.  The access south of Rte 1 includes the coastal salt pond Ninigret Pond, along with trails and kayak launch site, as well as bathrooms. The salt ponds are good wintering sites for ducks. The visitor center,  north of Rte 1, on Bend Road features trails reaching over to Wachaug Pond, a freshwater Pond on the glacial moraine.

Dress for the weather, bring a snack, and a portable seat if needed.

Fee – $20.00; $10.00 RIWPS members
