AS THIS PROGRAM IS FULL, REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED. Pine Top was once a popular ski slope. Today, this area around Escoheag Hill is part of Arcadia Management Area. The old ski trails are being managed for wildlife that prefer an early successional habitat. The surrounding forest has good diversity with oaks, hickories, maples, beech and ash trees. The moist hillside is dotted with seeps that make for interesting exploration. Expect to find maidenhair and long beech ferns. The old gravel parking lot is especially interesting: While nutrient-poor, the moisture makes it habitable for some plants such as mosses, clubmosses, and carnivorous sundews. At least nine species of orchids are known from this property, although a couple have not been seen for a while.
We will walk 2 – 3 miles with a couple of hills. Some will be off trail.
