The familiar fall-flowering asters were placed in six different genera during recent rearrangements of these species. Although the new scientific names may seem confusing, the reclassifications have actually clarified the distinctions among members of this group of plants. Once the macroand micromorphological characters that differentiate these genera have been learned, it becomes relatively straightforward to recognize them. Research Botanist at NEWFS, Arthur Haine’s discussion of this topic illustrated with numerous color images will help explain the new classifications.
