This hike is the second of four in our series, Plants & Their Places with Doug McGrady. The Tefft Hill area of Arcadia has mature hardwood forests dotted with streams and wetlands. We’ll hike along the Tefft Hill Trail and Arcadia Trail, and do a little bushwhacking.

Along the streams and seeps we’ll see the greater purple-fringed bog-orchid blooming. Be prepared for some wet areas. Some of the orchids are on firm ground, but some are in a few inches of water and muck. Other interesting species include the little club-spur bog-orchid, squaw-root, blue-bead lily, rattlesnake fern, and cut-leaf grapefern.

Doug McGrady is a long-time member of the Rhode Island Wild Plant Society, an experienced walk leader, and former board member.  While a data network engineer by trade, he devotes his spare time to exploring the wilds of New England, seeking and documenting populations of rare plants.

Bring a drink, a snack and a camera. Sturdy shoes, long pants and long sleeves recommended.
Half our time will be off trail. The terrain off trail is a little rough, but we’ll go slowly.
