Seed Workshop: Seed Collection

October 4, 2017 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Due to rain this program, originally scheduled for September 20, has been moved to OCTOBER 4.

Join Rhode Island Natural History Survey botanist Hope Leeson for the second of three sessions in our Native Plant Seed Workshop Series.

This field session, in the West Greenwich section of the Arcadia Management Area, will focus on collecting seed from those plant that we identified our first session. These include Lobelia cardinalis -cardinal flower, several species of Solidago – goldenrod, and asters as well as others. We will meet at the Frosty Hollow Pond Parking Area. Directions to Frosty Hollow Pond

(At the third session on October 25 we will meet indoors at the Natural History Survey in Kingston to clean and process the seeds that have been collected.)

Although the workshops are intended as a series, participants do not need to attend all three sessions.

Hope is an authority on Rhode Island Native Plants. In addition to her many roles at Rhode Island Natural History Survey she directs the Rhody Native™ Initative, which seeks to preserve the biodiversity of Rhode Island’s native plant communities, wildlife, and pollinators, by facilitating the state’s capacity to produce genetically native plants. Rhody Native™ celebrates Rhode Island’s local identity.

Please note seed collection on public lands can only be done with proper written authorization.  We thank the Department of Environmental Management for allowing us to collect seed in the Arcadia Management Area.

Fee:  $15.00; $10.00 for RIWPS members
Participation is limited to 15 per session.
