Tuesday Morning Children’s Walk: Arcadia Management Area, Browning Mill Pond

May 17, 2016 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 pm

Trail at Browning Mill PondArcadia Management Area, located in south Rhode Island, is the state’s largest recreation area with over 14,000 acres. On this guided nature walk, we will explore about 1 mile of the Browning Mill Pond trail. We’ll identify plants, trees, insects and birds. Bring your binoculars and maybe we will be lucky enough to see a pileated woodpecker! Depending on the group’s interest, we can share our knowledge on such topics as pollination, the food chain, soils, etc.

Walks are suitable for children K thru 6th grade. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Browning Mill Pond is a part of State Management area.  During hunting season  (the second Saturday in September to the last day of February and the third Saturday in April to the last day in May) hikers are required to wear 200 square inches of solid daylight fluorescent orange. Typically a hat is 200 square inches.  RIWPS has a few orange vests available. Please contact communications@riwps.org to reserve a vest.

Bring water and snacks and be sure to use restrooms before your arrival as there are minimal facilities at this location.  Long sleeved shirts, long pants, socks and sturdy shoes are always recommended for walks on trails in the woods.

Leader —Becky Settje, a RI Wild Plant volunteer and nature enthusiast, has over 30 years experience working with children through various programs including Girl Scouts, 4-H and homeschooling. She is currently a school group docent for Garden in the Woods, a native plant garden in Framingham, MA. Becky has a passion to share her love of flora and fauna with children. Through her energetic, fun  and “child led” approach, your children will learn to become nature detectives as we explore and observe the great outdoors.
