Aiming to Address Declining Forest Songbird Populations
Paul Dolan, Tree Warden, Town of Scituate and Area Director, RI Resource Conservation & Development Council will provide an introduction and overview of the forestry for Rhode Island’s Birds Project. This project addresses declining forest songbird populations by creating and implementing demonstration sites and practices to enhance forest songbird habitat throughout Rhode Island. It includes Rhode Island Birder’s Dozen, twelve forest birds that have been identified by the Rhode Island Woodland Partnership. (Pileated Woodpecker, Scarlet Tanager, Pine Warbler, Wood Thrush, Northern Waterthrush, Black and White Warbler, Black-Throated Green Warbler, Eastern Wood-Pewee, Barred Owl, Red – Eyed Vireo, Ovenbird, Rose – Breasted Grosbeak)
These species were selected because they
- Are simple to identify by sight or sound;
- Collectively use a wide range of forest types and conditions for feeding and for breeding;
- Are showing a decline in global breeding populations or are at risk for decline; and
- Are supported by large tracts of contiguous forest.
A Lifelong Forester, Paul Dolan’s goal is to leave the earth a better place by his actions. Paul has dedicated his professional career to public service and the health of the state of Rhode Island’s forests as Urban and Community Forest Program Coordinator and Deputy State Forester.
