DESCRIPTION:Local Bees: Pollinating Native Plants and Agricultural Crops\nLimited free spaces available\, RSVP required. RSVP is through the Glass Station.  CLICK HERE\nJoin the URI Bee Lab\, Rhode Island Wild Plant Society\, and The Glass Station for an engaging look at our local bees and the vital role they play in pollinating native plants and crops. We’ll also share insights from recent work supported by the Glass Bee Fellowship*. Research Fellows at the Bee Lab Rachel Fiona and Fiona Dell’Antonio\, and Professor of Entomology and head of URI’s Bee Lab will share their research findings. \nRepresentatives from the Rhode Island Wild Plant Society will questions about pollinators\, native plant species\, and ways you can support local biodiversity. RIWPS will also offer ecotypic seeds from some of the species in their own ReSeeding RI initiative along with seeds from other ecotypic 59  species.  Plant these seeds to preserve the genetics of our local native plant populations and increase biodiversity across RI and the region. \n*The Glass Bee Fellowship is a summer research fellowship funded by sales of artist Jennifer Nauck’s glass bees\, and made available annually through the Coastal and Environmental Fellows Program for an undergraduate at the University of Rhode Island. \nCome with your questions! \nLimited free spaces available\, RSVP required. DESCRIPTION:Hone your observation skills and improve your ability to identify wildflowers\nBloodroot- photo\, Kathy Barton \nOn May 3\, 2026\, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm\, Nathan Lambstrom will lead a walk through the Nature Conservancy’s Francis C. Carter Preserve\, focusing on taking the guesswork out of wildflower identification for the nature lover with no formal botanical training. \nNathan will have some copies of Newcomb’s Wildflower Guide that will walk us through a simple but precise logical key system. Bring your own copy if you have one. Nathan Lambstrom is a lecturer in the College of Environment and Life Sciences (CELS) at URI. A garden ecologist\, Nathan also runs his own business designing and planting gardens that support wildlife\, conserve water\, and enrich home environments. SUMMARY:First Thursday Botanizing Walk: Ben Utter Trail (Exeter)
DESCRIPTION:Spring Emphemerals Welcome You to Botanize\nTrillium cernuum (Nodding Trillium)\, Arcadia Management Area\, Exeter\, RI \nMay 7\, 2026 | 10 am – 12 pm \nAcadia Management Area | Exeter\, RI \nOn this walk with biologist Denise Poyer\, we will discover early spring flowers deep in the Arcadia Management Area. \nWe will first walk south on Sand Trail to look for Indian cucumber root (Medeola virginiana)\, dolls-eyes (Actaea pachypoda)\, sharp-lobed hepatica (Anemone acutiloba) and many other ephemeral flowers. This trail features a wonderful patch of nodding trillium (Trillium cernuum)\, one of the few trillium species found in RI. \nWe will then turn back north on the Ben Utter Trail to search for downy rattlesnake-plantain (Goodyera pubescens)\, as well as more wetland species\, including early violets. We will key out as many wildflowers as we can\, and learn about the Mystery Plant challenge on the RIWPS’ companion website\, Among-RI-Wildflowers. \n The workshop will be on May 30\, 2026 from 9 am-12 pm\, URI Greenhouse\, 6 Greenhouse Rd.\, Kingston\, RI. DESCRIPTION:Trillium cernuum (Nodding Trillium)\, \nOn Saturday June 6\, 2026 from 10 am – 12 pm join Joe Kroger at Caratunk Wildlife Refuge in Seekonk\, MA.  Joe Kroger\, Audubon Society of Rhode Island’s naturalist of the year in 2024\, has 40 years of experience at Caratunk Wildlife Refuge.  We will look  for some plants of concern\, notably nodding trillium\, begonias\, and baneberry\, in addition to the usual suspects. \nJoe also leads the bird program at Caratunk as well\, so he can lead us along the blue bird trail too.
