Entangled Life: How Fungi Make Our Worlds, Change Our Minds & Shape Our Futures
Come join us in a discussion of the fascinating book, Entangled Life, by Merlin Sheldrake on February 27, 2022 at 2 PM.
Entangled Life comes to us from the award-winning author and biologist, Merlin Sheldrake, who beautifully shares his love of fungi in a scholarly, yet entertaining manner. His detailed mycological studies and broad intellectual understanding give him unique insights into the many important roles fungi play within ecosystems. Although it is estimated that only 10% of fungal species have been described scientifically, what is known about their intriguing forms, metabolism and co-evolution boggles the mind. Fungi break down and release molecules from rocks, create alcohol from sugars, provide food for animals, and cause and prevent disease. Importantly, especially from the perspective of RIWPS, ninety percent of vascular plant species depend on fungal interactions to obtain nutrients.
This remarkable book will expand your awareness of fungal life forms beyond the obvious mushrooms to the hidden networks that interconnect the natural world (and may inspire you to ask fundamental questions about your own role in the world). Well-written, exhilarating, it is an awakening to the complexity and wonder of these lesser known species.
The book is available through local bookstores or online, and a number of copies are available through Rhode Island’s Ocean State Libraries.
