BROWN UNIVERSITY HERBARIUM: A Resource for Appreciating, Studying & Protecting Our Native Plants

Brown University Herbarium offers a priceless snapshot of botanical life, in Rhode Island and across the nation and the world, in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It serves as an important resource to the scientific community for studies of climate change, genetics, evolution, conservation, and biodiversity.

Tim Whitfeld, Collections Manager and member of the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, will present a brief history of the herbarium and some of its important specimens, as well as discuss the process of botanical collection and current projects at the herbarium.

Dr. Whitfeld earned his Ph.D. in Plant Biology from the University of Minnesota and brings his experience at Harvard University Herbarium, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, and his own work on plant diversity in lowland rain forest of Papua New Guinea to this position.
