Round-leaved Sundew, DMcGrady

Are there plants in bloom this early in the Spring? We will find out as we stroll along a trail at Great Swamp Wildlife Management Area in South Kingstown. As we will amble along a wetland we hope to see plants of swamps, bogs and open water, such as Chamaedaphne calyculata (Leatherleaf), Vaccinium macrocarpon (Cranberry), Vaccinium corymbosum (Highbush Blueberry), Decodon verticillatus (Water Willow) and Drosera rotundifolia (Round-leaved Sundew.) The plants we will observe and whether or not they will be in flower depends upon nature’s calendar. Be assured there will be plenty to fill our senses.

Dress for the weather. Waterproof foot gear is recommended. Long pants with hems tucked into socks and insect spray will deter ticks. Bring Newcomb, or your favorite plant identification resource, hand lens, field notebook and writing tool.
