RIWPS part of the team for Spring maintenance of the Native Plant Garden – Providence Train Station

On April  17  the Providence Urban Wildlife Conservation Partnership, Providence Parks & Recreation, U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, University of RI Master Gardeners, Volunteers (Dan & Grady) and the RI Wild Plant Society joined hands for Spring maintenance at the Amtrak Station located in the heart of Providence. It was a perfect gardening day with many train travelers thanking all of us for what we do.

Ilya Iskhakov, Providence Parks Landscape Designer, and Alison Schwartz, Sachuest Point Visitor Manager, directed the effort for  invasive grass removal, especially the  Setaria sp. (aka wild foxtail millet or bristlegrass) in the beds.

A special shout out to RIWPS president Pat Foley and his wife Judith for welcoming a few volunteers  dig  some of the emerging native plants in their own garden to supplement the garden’s existing native plants.  So much for our pollinators and ourselves to like about New England aster, heart leaved purple aster, lanced-leave American aster, swamp rose and bee balm!

More helping hands are always  welcome to help with Providence Urban Gardening projects.  Email  Mark Cordle
