Join us on March 26, 2026, from 11:30 an to 1:30 pm, to explore Audubon’s Lathrop Wildlife Refuge on the shore of Winnapaug Pond, Westerly, RI. Salt marshes and salt ponds are both sensitive and resilient Rhode Island habitats. Scott Ruhren, Ph.D., Senior Director of Conservation, Audubon Society of Rhode Island will lead us around the tidal coastal wetlands, which are home to many indicator species and a diversity of animals. Animals rely on many plants for food and shelter while many plants rely on animals for pollination and dispersal.
In addition to our general botanizing, along the way we will also explore the stresses of living in this environment now under the pressure of sea level rise. On the trail through the coastal forest to the marsh and Winnapaug Pond we will decipher how plants and animals struggle and cooperate in order to survive.
Easy to moderate trail hike ranging from dry to very wet. It is approximately 1-mile round trip. Wear waterproof shoes, knee boots are best, and dress appropriately for the weather.
This walk is free and open to the public.
